Monstaville Book II. Chapter 38

“Those whom people fear
Cannot but also fear others.”
- Laozi, Chapter 20, Daodejing. Making This Life Significant. A Philosophical Translation by Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall (The Ballantine Publishing Group, New York, U.S., 2003), p.105. Usually translated ‘that which all people fear is, indeed, to be feared.’

How To Grasp The Bird’s Tail If You Don’t Speak Chinese by Jane Schorre. Calligraphy by Margaret Chang (Texas, U.S.: Arts of China Seminars, 1997).

p.77-78. [‘Strike the tiger’ (left and right): Da Hu].

If we are thinking of Tiger as a metaphor for our Taiji energy, what a multitude of uses for it are presented to us by the word da! But we can also think of Tiger as symbolic of the situations we deal with in life, and Zhuangzi has a Tiger tale that is pertinent here:

When Yan He was appointed tutor to the crown prince, son of the Duke of Wei, he sought advice from Ju Boyu, a minister of the state. ‘The prince is a cruel man, depraved and murderous. If I let him follow his violent nature the country may be endangered. If I try to curb it, I may be endangered. He is able to see the faults of others, but he cannot see his own faults. How shall I deal with a man like this?’

‘Good question!’ said Ju Boyu. ‘Be cautious and aware. You must not try to improve him but to improve yourself. Be flexible and in tune with him, but keep your own centre. Follow him but do not allow yourself to be pulled off balance or you will be overthrown and destroyed. Harmonise with him but do not be pulled into his evil ways or you will be criticised and condemned. If he wants to be childish, erratic or reckless, be childish, erratic or reckless with him. Know his nature, and you can lead him to where you want him to be.’

Then Ju Boyu went on to say: ‘You need to know how the tiger trainer accomplishes his job. He never gives the tiger a live animal to eat so it will not develop its instinct for killing. He never even gives it a whole dead animal to eat so it will not develop its instinct for tearing apart. He is constantly aware of the tiger’s appetite and sensitive to its ferocious nature. Though tigers are very different from men, they can be controlled and trained to be gentle by understanding tiger nature and going along with it. Only those who go against it can be harmed.’

p.78. It is a way of handling situations with no aggression, violence or opposition. It is a way of overcoming by yielding.

Kung Fu For Girls. Self-defence for divas by Simon Harrison (Ebury Press, London, U.K., 2003).

p.4. You can’t change the attitude of muggers, rapists and murderers by being outrages at their behaviour. You must change your own. Know what makes you vulnerable to attack. Showing fear or being overtly nervous. Looking lost, wearing restrictive clothing, not paying attention and displaying expensive techno treats like minidisk players and mobiles are sometimes too much of a temptation for our crooked little friends. On the street be prepared and cultivate a preventative attitude.

p.12. This is the dangerous bloke. Great waves of greed and desire slosh about inside his head, overpowering all sense of reason and human dignity. He is a menace. But, as he hurtles towards you, he suffers two major disadvantages. By assuming you are weak and therefore an easy target, it increases your element of surprise, making it a cinch for you to deck him. Not only will he not be expecting you to fight back, but this klutz is oblivious to the fact that he is literally oozing weak points. [Harrison provides examples of weak spots: ears, eyes, nose, chin, throat and neck, body, groin, knees, shins and feet].

Above All Don't Wobble, Chapter 7 by Osho (22 January 1976, Chuang Tzu Auditorium, Rajneesh Foundation, Pune, India, 1976). p.94-95.

And never let your hate decide anything. Knowing well there is hate, always let love decide. I'm not saying suppress, no; but never let it decide. Let it be there, let it have a secondary place. Accept it, but never let it be decisive.
Neglect it and it dies of its own accord. Pay more attention to love, and just let love decide. Sooner or later, love will take possession of your whole being, and there will be no place left for hate.
There is an anecdote about one mystic woman's life, Rabiya-el-Adavia. She was a Mohammedan mystic and one of the greatest women ever. In the Koran there is a sentence saying hate the devil and love God. Rabiya crossed it out, corrected the Koran - which no Mohammedan can even think of; it would be a sacrilege.
Another mystic once came to stay with Rabiya. He asked for a copy of the Koran for his morning prayers, and Rabiya gave him her own copy. When he came across the correction he was mad. He said, 'Who has destroyed your Koran. Haven't you looked inside it? Somebody has corrected it! This is not possible; Mohammed's word cannot be corrected!'
Mohammedans believe Mohammed is the last prophet. They call him the seal of the prophets: now there is no longer a possibility of any new prophecy, he is the last of the prophets. There have been others before him, but there will be no more after him - the last message from God has arrived.
Rabiya said, 'Nobody has corrected it. It is me. I corrected it because it became impossible to tolerate that passage. I love God, and I love Him so much that in the beginning the hate for the devil continued to hang around like a shadow, just on the fringe. But as my love grew, as it became more and more intense, just like intense sunlight, the shadow disappeared.
'In my whole being there is no possibility of hating. Even if the devil comes I will have to offer my love, because I cannot offer anything else...there is nothing left. How can you see through the eyes of love if someone is a devil? He will be a god to me, because only God exists for love. So I had to correct the sentence, because it became intolerable; it didn't fit with my experience. I followed the Koran in loving God, but then I have to correct it in not hating the devil.'
Just let it hang around you - not only about meditation, but about anything. Mind always has the opposite hidden behind it. You love the same person you hate. You respect the same person that you rebel against.

“Live, Laugh, Love!!! Never HATE!!! Appreciate !!!” (On someone’s MySpace profile).

“Violence is a product of fear.” - Donnie Darko (directed by Richard Kelly, 2001).

“The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.” - The Dalai Lama.

“When you think everything is someone else´s fault, you will suffer a lot. When you realise that everything springs only from yourself, you will learn both peace and joy. Pride leads to violence and evil. The truly good gaze upon everything with love and understanding.” - The Dalai Lama.

Retrospective inserts.

“For many years you have hidden from yourself. You stand behind the door looking through the crack at your life, being afraid to fully immerse yourself into life. You do not come here to sit on the sideline, to stand in the bleachers, to hide behind doors. You come into this life to experience it 100%, to open up every inch of you that has been closed, to feel into the fullness of time, to let the raw passions, the juices of life flow through you.
You are afraid of what your heart and your soul asks you to do. Your humanness says to walk up to that person and say hello yet your knees shake, as fear becomes your new best friend. Why are you so afraid to walk forward and introduce yourself to the very love of your life?
The very vibration of the word AFRAID is a 10/10/10 energy a #30 in fullness. ‘Afraid’ asks to be cleared in the year 2010 (#30). Using the vibration of conversion which is an expression of the energy of the #10 send love into all you fear, all you are afraid of, what goes bump in the night in your soul. Dilute the fear fields with the soft rains of love. If you feel fear in any thought/from walking in the snow/ice/to living or dying/stop, take a deep breath and send love into that fear.
Everything in you screams that you hate your life, your job, your relationship, and yet you do not take one step toward changing your experience? It is a time of loving where you are planted. From that point of loving, from that centre of your universe, move forth fully into what your heart desires. Otherwise you will be stuck in a sea of mud with the very energy of hate keeping you bound to the person place or thing.
Life is not your jailer. Earth is not a prison. It is but a grand amusement park and you are afraid to ride the rides so you stay in the shallow end of the park. Most times you are afraid to ingest the sweetness life has to offer. Afraid of what is good, waiting on the other shoe to drop. You stand still, paralysed with fear like a deer in the headlights, afraid to move forward, afraid to move backward. Your life shows that.”

“When you meet anyone remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. To everyone you meet today, say silently:

You are the one Self with me,
United with our Creator in this Self.
I honour you because of what I am
And what He is, Who loves us both as one.”
A Course in Miracles (The Foundation for Inner Peace, CA., U.S., 1976).

It is the best antidote
for anxiety and depression.
It is a business asset.
It attracts and keeps friends.
It lightens human burdens.
It is the direct route to serenity
